A repeat offender gets an additional two years after escaping police custody

Delan Eugene, who escaped police custody while appearing at the Gros Islet court about a week ago, was sentenced to two years in prison for stealing and escaping lawful custody.

Eugene pleaded guilty to both offences when he appeared in court after being captured.

The defendant escaped from police custody at about 10:15 a.m.  on Friday, May 10, 2013 when he was brought to the Gros Islet court on a stealing charge. The 19-year-old was captured at about 7:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in Marisule, Gros Islet.

On Saturday night, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 was felt in several islands in the northeastern Caribbean, including Antigua and Barbuda, but there were no immediate reports of injury of damage. Late last month, Antigua and Barbuda and several other countries in the Leeward Islands were rocked by a quake with a magnitude of 5.1, also with an epicenter close to Barbuda.Saturday night’s earthquake is the latest in a series of tremors that have been occurring in several Caribbean countries in recent months.Earlier this month, Trinidad and Tobago was shaken by a quake with a magnitude of 3.7 as officials warned residents of the oil rich twin-island republic to be prepared for a major earthquake.
